What is TMD?

The terms TMJ and TMD are often used interchangeably for the same conditions. TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that attaches the lower jaw to the temporal bone if your skull. TMD stands for temporomandibular joint disorder, which refers to the actual medical condition caused by a misaligned jaw.

TMD can have many symptoms, such as:
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Pain or clicking in the joint
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Problems chewing or swallowing

It is often unclear what causes TMD, but some possible causes include:
  • Accidents involving a blow to the face or whiplash from a car crash
  • Clenching or grinding teeth while sleeping or during stressful situations
  • Arthritis in the TMJ

If you are one of the many people who suffer from pain related to TMD, it's time for you to visit one of our Chicago neuromuscular dentists. We serve the northern suburbs of Chicago and provide treatment for TMD. Call or email us today because there is no reason to go through life in pain when we are here to help.
